Benzyl benzoate, lotion

Benzyl benzoate lotion guidance for scabies, with age-based dilution and contact-time instructions.

This guide page is for structured reference only and does not replace a clinician, pharmacist, or emergency review. Dose choice, route choice, interactions, and safety decisions still need professional judgment.

Therapeutic action

Scabicide.

Indications

Scabies, although 5% permethrin cream is preferred for this indication.

Forms and strengths

25% lotion.

Preparation and use

Shake the bottle before application or dilution.

Dilute the lotion as required according to age, using drinking or boiled water.

Apply the lotion to the whole body, including scalp, postauricular areas, palms, and soles, paying particular attention to skin creases and interdigital web spaces. Leave on for the recommended contact time, then rinse thoroughly with water.

In children under 2 years, wrap hands to avoid accidental ingestion and contact with eyes.

  • Child under 2 years: 1 part of 25% lotion plus 3 parts of water, contact time 12 hours, or 6 hours in children under 6 months, one application only.
  • Child 2 to 12 years: 1 part of 25% lotion plus 1 part of water, contact time 24 hours, two applications.
  • Child over 12 years and adult: undiluted 25% lotion, contact time 24 hours, two applications.
  • Pregnant woman: undiluted 25% lotion, contact time 12 hours, one application only.

Contra-indications, adverse effects, precautions

  • Do not apply to broken skin, the face, or mucous membranes.
  • May cause burning sensation, contact dermatitis in repeated applications, seizures in the event of marked transcutaneous absorption, and rarely hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. In case of accidental contact, flush immediately with plenty of water.
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: no contra-indication. Do not apply to the breasts.
  • Close contacts should be treated at the same time regardless of symptoms, and clothes and bed linen should be decontaminated after each treatment.
  • Itching may persist for up to 4 weeks after the end of treatment and is not a reason to re-treat during this period.
  • Prepare dilution in a glass container. The lotion may damage certain plastics.
