Alcohol-based handrub = ABHR

ABHR guidance for antiseptic handrubbing before and after procedures when hands are not visibly soiled.

This guide page is for structured reference only and does not replace a clinician, pharmacist, or emergency review. Dose choice, route choice, interactions, and safety decisions still need professional judgment.

Therapeutic action

Antiseptic.

Indications

Antiseptic handrubbing before and after procedures, whether gloves are used or not.

Forms and strengths

Solution or gel containing 80% ethanol or 75% isopropanol and inactive ingredients such as humectants and emollients to reduce skin dryness and irritation.

Use

  • ABHR can only be used if hands are not visibly dirty or soiled with organic matter. There must be no residual powder on hands and hands must be dry.
  • Apply 3 ml of solution or gel in a cupped hand and spread to cover the entire surface of hands.
  • Rub hands for 20 to 30 seconds, palm to palm, palm over dorsum, between fingers, around the thumbs and nails, until hands are completely dry.
  • Do not dilute the product. Do not rinse off or dry hands.
  • As long as hands are not visibly soiled, the product may be reapplied as many times as necessary without handwashing with soap and water before or after applying the product.

Contra-indications, adverse effects, precautions

  • Do not use if hands are visibly dirty or soiled with organic matter, if there is residual powder on hands, or if hands are wet.
  • Do not use after direct contact with a patient with a parasitic skin infection such as scabies or lice: wash hands instead.
  • Do not use with soap, creams, lotions, or other antiseptics.
  • May cause stinging sensation on broken skin, skin dryness and irritation with frequent use, and rarely hypersensitivity reactions.
  • In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with water.
